10 Must-Have Survival Items for History Channel’s Alone:

Jason Salyer’s Field-Tested Picks

Jason Salyer Alone Survival Gear

Envision that you’re dropped in the wilderness with nothing but your wits and a dead alligator staring you down. That was me on History Channel’s Alone: The Beast, surviving 25 days in Louisiana’s swamps with zero tools, just my clothes and a heap of grit. A viewer, Señor Fluff and Stuff (killer cat name, right?), asked what 10 items I’d bring to dominate Alone. With 30 years as an outdoorsman, 15 years prepping, and experience training college athletes to Navy Special Ops, I’ve got a field-tested list to keep you harder to kill—body, mind, and spirit. Let’s dive in. No excuses. Let’s go on three!

1. Sleeping Bag: Your Ticket to Actual Rest

Alone throws you into freezing nights. A sleeping bag saves you from burning calories all night keeping a fire going. I recommend options like the ones in my Amazon Storefront.

2. Bivy Bag: Protect Your Lifeline

A bivy bag keeps your sleeping bag dry and intact. Storms in Louisiana taught me that lesson fast. Join my Patreon community for more lessons I learned the hard way.

3. 12x12 Tarp: Instant Shelter, Zero Excuses

A tarp saves time and calories. Fast shelter equals more energy for food and fire. It’s survival math.

4. Ferro Rod: Fire You Can Count On

Friction fires are cool until they fail. Ferro rods are my go-to. I kept mine tied to my belt in Maine and never worried.

5. Machete: The Do-Everything Blade

On3 Machete

I bring my custom On3 machete—chops, digs, and butchers everything. I once used a reed knife to clean an alligator... never again.

6. Two-Quart Pot: Your Kitchen in the Wild

Boil water. Cook stew. Preserve fat and protein. Burn bowls are cool until you're weak and sick. Pot > primitive.

7. Sewing Kit: The Overlooked Lifesaver

Mosquitoes swarmed me after I tore my pants on day two. A needle saved me. Fix gear or suffer.

8. Bow and Arrow: Big Game, Big Win

Bag a deer or moose, and you win. I’ve shot trad archery for years. It’s a risk—but a game-changer.

9. Fishing Kit: Renewable Calories

300 yards of line. 35 barbless hooks. Consistent fish, crawdads, and protein with no calorie waste.

10. Salt: Your Body’s Secret Weapon

You can’t find it in the wild. You need it to live and preserve meat. Craving salt was one of the hardest parts of my Alone experience.

Would I Do Alone Again?

Honestly? Maybe not. It wrecked my body, and I missed my family. The tradeoff is brutal. Would you do it?
